15 – 20 green beans – chopped fine
1/2 cup tuvar dal
1/2 cup chana dal
4-5 whole red chillies
2 sprigs curry leaves
1/2 tsp hing pd
1/2 tsp turmeric pd
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dal
oil as req
salt to taste


Wash and soak both Tuvar and chana dal for an hour or 2
Boil beans with little salt, for 8-10 mins.
Take whole red chillies, curry leaves, hing, turmeric pd and very little salt and coarse grind them
Now add dal to this mix and pulse grind them till you get a coarse sand like consistency
Heat oil and season with urad and mustard seeds
Now add the ground masala with dal and stir/cook for abt 5-6 mins
Add beans and adjust salt n stir fry, mixing gently, for abt 5 mins
Serve hot as a side dish, with rice or chapatis

Other vegetables like cluster beans, cabbage, banana flowers etc can also be used to make usili.
